MATER DEI OFFENSIVE PLAYBOOK

This is the whole offense. It has four layers, kept apart so nobody confuses them:

  • Part I -- Core. What we teach and quiz now. Confirmed by Coach Bazz's 2026 call sheets, practice plans and live corrections.
  • Part II -- The system, by phase. Every family, how it works, what we know and what we don't.
  • Part III -- Complete repertoire. Every call found in the playbook record, with its status. Nothing is dropped because a later call sheet left it off.
  • Part IV -- Vocabulary, Jeopardy map, website proposal.

Conflicting versions and the evidence behind every decision are in the Teaching Record.

Source markers:

  • -- Coach Bazz's direct words.
  • (reference detail) -- compilation detail consistent with Bazz but not separately confirmed by him.
  • (unconfirmed recovered entry) -- AI-recovered entry (Jan 22, 2026) not confirmed by Bazz.

Words we use exactly

  • Action -- one thing players do together: a screen, a cut, a handoff, a pass.
  • Play -- a sequence of actions.
  • Combination -- two plays called together and run in order. Double Celtic is two plays: Double, then Celtic.
  • Option -- a choice inside a play or mode, signaled or read.
  • Alignment / shape -- where players start. A shape is not a play.
  • Dash in a call -- separates phases or parts of a play.

Roles -- numbers are jobs

# Role Abbrev
1 Push Guard PG
2 Inbounder Trailer IT
3 Strong Corner SC
4 Weak Wing WW
5 Weak Corner WC
  • Do not call 1 a "point guard" or 5 a "center."
  • Inside a two- or three-player action, the action's own labels are used only for that action.
  • The press break uses its own role names (section 4).

PART II -- THE SYSTEM, BY PHASE

The possession runs: Fast Break -> Read and Attack -> Secondary Break -> (Press Break when pressed) -> Early Offense -> Half Court -> Special Situations.

1. Fast Break -- Natural

  • 1, Push Guard: after the rebound, push the ball down the middle toward the pro lanes -- the slots above the elbows on the three-point arc.
  • Button hook: a runner sprints ahead, then hooks back toward the ball to receive the pass.
  • Runner jobs (reference detail):
    • Deep rim runner sprints to the weak-side block.
    • Ball-side corner runner goes to the ball-side corner (Splash).
    • Weak-side corner runner goes to the weak corner (Water).
    • Trailer runs 15-20 feet behind on the opposite lane.
    • Wide runners stay outside the volleyball-court lines until they cross the free-throw line unguarded.
    • The Push Guard does not drive past the free-throw line unless the layup is there.

2. Read and Attack -- Fang, Trey, Six

"Read and React" became "Read and Attack."

Call One line
Fang Attack middle. Read-and-attack dribble drive.
Trey Attack right. Three-man read and attack.
Six Attack left. Three-man read and attack.

Trey / Six

  • Trey is the right side; Six is the same action on the left.
  • 1, 2 and 3 work the ball side; 4 and 5 hold the weak side.
  • 3 runs ahead, then button-hooks back toward the ball.

**Options **

  1. Give -- 1 passes to 3 and follows. 3 hands it back into 1's stomach like a football handoff. 1 attacks.
  2. Keep -- 1 passes to 3 and follows. 3 foot-fakes toward 1, keeps it, turns and attacks the middle.
  3. Point -- pick and replace. 3 points at the feet of 1's defender, sets the ball screen, then replaces the spot 1 came from.
  4. Side Fist -- fake screen and replace. 3 approaches like a screen, sprints past and replaces. 1 attacks any opening; if none, 1 hook-passes back to 3.
  5. Big Fist -- fake screen, dribble-at, backdoor. 3 shows the screen, 1 dribbles at 3, 3 cuts backdoor, 1 throws over the top.
  6. Tail -- pass back, alley-oop, then a three.
    • 1 passes back to 2, the trailer.
    • 3 sets the alley-oop screen for 1. 2 looks for 1 at the rim.
    • If the lob is not there, 2 passes to 3.
    • 2 sets the pin-down for 1 immediately after the pass.
    • 1 comes to the top of the circle for the three.

Rub with Trey/Six: Bazz calls "Trey Rub Splash" (Jan 22). Rub (screen and roll) works as an action word inside the mode alongside the six options.

Weak side under Trey/Six (2MOB) (reference detail): Down (pin-down), Up (back screen into flare), Thru (wing elevator into Hush), Post Down, Post Up.

Earlier option sets (kept in the Teaching Record C2):

  • Drop, Keep, Torch, Tail, Tail 2 (January master).
  • Go / Bravo / Brooklyn as the Trey Mode choices (December 2025 Architecture).

Pressure reads :

  • Against a blitz or hard hedge: Point, Big Fist, Fire (weak wing), Water (weak corner).
  • Against no-middle: attack the nail and find Water.

Fang

  • Attack middle off the dribble.
  • Named Fang calls under the Tiger category : Fang Side Fist, Fang Rub, Fang Push, Fang Kick, Fang Lift.
  • Website reading of the Fang package (reference detail):
    • The high-post player is a shooting threat on the flare.
    • Rub = screen and roll.
    • Side Fist = fake screen and pop to replace.
  • Routes for the five Fang calls are not written.
  • "Fang" is also named in the Joker family (6.4). Bazz uses the name in both places. The record does not say whether the Joker-family Fang runs the same actions as Read and Attack Fang, so they are listed separately.

3. Secondary Break -- Trigger Series

We run 5 series, 4 series, 3 series, 2 series as our secondary break. Teaching is in 6.1.

4. Press Break

Rule : Strong and Eyes carry the same half-court principles into the full court. Run the play once to break the press. A play is a sequence of actions.

Uptown = a half-court play run in the full court.

Call One line
Stomp Middle to sideline.
Side Sideline to middle.
Strong Strong / triangle spacing, extended full court. Run Strong once.
Eyes Uptown motion. Give-and-go to the inbounder.
Domino Uptown motion.

Stomp and Side -- Bazz's teaching

Press-break roles :

Abbrev Job name
SG Wide receiver
WG Draymond
WF Stompman
SF Second cutter
IB Inbounder

Spacing :

  • Guards start at the elbows.
  • They touch the baseline corners.
  • They sprint to free-throw-line extended across half court, then flash back in their own lanes.
  • SF and WF work the middle two fourths, in north/south lanes.
  • IB at midline.

Stomp:

  1. First cutter at the free-throw line -- the stompman.
  2. Then Draymond or the wide receiver.
  3. On a pass back, the inbounder dribbles hard to the middle until stopped and reads the flashbacks.
  • Passing order : WF passes to WG, then SG.
  • Stomp from horns : hit the middle, then the streaking guard. Goal: layup. No dribble necessary.

Side:

  1. Sideman.
  2. Second cutter -- two options.
  3. First cutter -- two options.
  4. Inbounder in the middle, reading two slice cutters.
  • The opposite forward goes deep, then flashes behind the cuts.
  • Passing order : SF passes to WG on the flashback, then SG on the flashback.

Bazz's Jan 27 one-liners -- Stomp "middle to sideline," Side "sideline to middle" -- summarize these sequences. Paths between the named spots are not written beyond what is above.

How we beat pressure

On ball Off ball
Calm and confident. Superman through the ball.
Hunt layup passes. Behind their head for skips.
Welcome the trap. Make them pay. Pop up for reversals.
Dribble up to pressure. Get action to start the offense.
Foot fake. Give and go. Attack the middle.
Throw it over the top. A moving player is an open player.

5. Early Offense

Early offense calls are verbs that take us from the break into a hitter.

  • Pop (Core) -- early offense to run a hitter from the wing. Example : come out in horns; one horn sets a pin-down for the other; pop into the stagger, an alphabet play, a 3-man off-ball action or a motion.
  • Kick -- early offense to run a hitter from the top.
  • Lift -- early offense to run a hitter from the corner (or 3 series).
  • Older verbs (Punch, Push, Hook, Go; Kick as a drag screen top to wing): Part III.

6. Half Court

6.1 Trigger Offense -- Strong, Chin, Temple

Trigger is our modernized triangle.

Alignment What it is
Strong The original, old-school Trigger: the sideline triangle.
Chin Princeton chin look. Chin is the motion offense; Tiger is the shape (our 2-3). We used it at San Diego High to move the ball against ATHLETIC L.A. TEAMS.
Temple 5-out. Move the ball around the perimeter and attack driving lanes. We used it to move the ball against EVERYONE.

Starting spots (reference detail):

  • Strong: 1 on the wing with the ball; 2 trailing above the arc; 3 deep ball-side corner; 4 weak short corner; 5 ball-side post above the block.
  • Temple: 1, 2, 3 on the perimeter; 4 weak wing at free-throw-line extended; 5 weak corner.
  • Chin: 1 and 2 in the slots; 3 and 4 on the wings at free-throw-line extended; 5 at the ball-side elbow.

Series (reference detail) -- from the wing, 1 enters to 5 (5 series), to 4 flashing high (4 series), to 3 in the corner (3 series), or back to 2 (2 series).

5 series (reference detail):

  1. 1 passes to 5.
  2. 3 cuts baseline (53 read); 1 cuts over the top (51 read).
  3. 5 reads the cleared side.
  4. 4 L-cuts to the high post (54 read).
  5. 2 fills the ball-side wing.
  6. Reverse through 4; 1 rises to the opposite wing for the reshape.

4 series -- two versions:

  • Handoff version (reference detail): 4 flashes to the ball-side elbow, reads 2's backdoor and 5's seal, then gives a dribble handoff to 1, who attacks the middle.
  • U-cut version : 1 U-cuts every time.
    • Easier to remember; emphasizes the reshape.
    • Lets 1 get comfortable shooting the reshape three from the wing.
    • Eliminates the DHO (Bounce and Weave cover DHO action).
    • Lets us "press on offense" with no dribbles.
    • Bazz notes it can compromise the 242.

3 and 2 series: named and practiced. Bazz distinguishes 2L and 2V as two ways to run 2 series. Routes are not written.

The reshape :

  • All Day -- alley-oop.
  • Slice -- layup cut.
  • Charlie -- three.
  • Corner three.

Reshape scoring -- score only from :

  • 11 -- 1 catch-and-shoot or catch-and-drive.
  • 33 -- pass to the corner, shot from the corner.
  • 48 -- All Day action.
  • 58 -- Slice action.
  • 22 -- Delta action.

Other Trigger alignments in Bazz's notes :

  • Flat (1-4 low Trigger), Fly (1-4 high Trigger), High (Trigger high), Hip (Trigger 2-1-2).
  • Trigger 4 and Trigger 5 (2-1-2 trigger; "Lamar All Day").
  • Arrow (PNR Trigger Temple), Money (PNR Trigger), Dunkers Trigger.

6.4 5-Man Hitters

**Stack plays -- how they are built **

  • Stack (Core) -- a three-man game: double high ball screen from the top, attacking the paint.
  • Double -- a double high ball screen from one wing to the other wing. Also "high screens into Celtic from I formation."
  • Celtic -- the 3MOB stagger (6.8).
  • Double Celtic (Core) -- "actually two plays": Double, then Celtic. Screen to stagger.
  • Stack Celtic -- a combination: Stack's double high ball screen, Spain action, swing into stagger. "Spain to stagger."
Call Built from
Stack Stack (top, attack the paint)
Double Double (wing to wing)
Double Celtic Double + Celtic
Stack Celtic Stack + Spain + Celtic stagger

The January master filed Stack and Double as Early Offense: Stack flows into Top 3MG, Double into 3MOB. (reference detail) Placement is settled in the Teaching Record C9.

**Joker family -- quick hitters out of the Tiger shape **

Like Trigger, but different things happen when the ball goes to the high post.

  • Joker -- on high-post entry, look for Joker action passes . Scissor cuts off the high post.
  • Splits -- "Just like Joker is easy ball movement into Joker action, Split can be easy ball movement into Split action." The Split action itself is not written.
  • Buzz -- not written as a Joker-family call. ("Buzz" as a word: hit the post after the roll. )
  • Away -- not written.
  • Batman -- "batman is really an early offense, like pop or weave or kick"; "if you hit batman on top, can run eagle plays." Earlier compilations call it a scissor hitter from 2-3 high. (reference detail)
  • Fang -- named in the family. See section 2 on the shared name.

Scissor rules (reference detail):

  • Both cutters go at once; nobody waits.
  • Cut as fast as you can, and touch the block with your foot.
  • Slice cutter: weak side of the high post to the ball-side block.
  • Alley-Oop cutter: strong side to the weak-side block.

The Tiger category, Jan 14 : Fang Side Fist, Fang Rub, Fang Push, Fang Kick, Fang Lift, Joker, Batman.

  • 4 Eyes, 4 Tilt (4-Man Motions) -- (unconfirmed recovered entry); not written.

6.6 3-Man Games -- Top and Side

Our 3-man games come as twins: the same action from the top or from the side. A family can be called by its family name with "top" or "side" (Core list: "Alpha (top and side)") or by the twin's own name. Both uses coexist.

Family Top Side One line
Alpha Alpha Bravo Ball screen, flare and dive.
Echo Echo Fox Pass, screen away, flash back into pin-down.
Hush Goggles (also "Hush Top") Hush Pass, screen away, flash back into Get.
Charlie Charlie Delta Charlie: Get and flare . Delta: cross cuts, curl back, Get (reference detail); reshape code 22.

Earlier fuller routes (reference detail):

  • Alpha/Bravo: cross cuts into the ball screen first.
  • Echo: screen away, Slice, pin-down.
  • Fox: UCLA/Flex, pop back, pin-down.
  • Hush: UCLA and 40, or Flex and 40.
  • Bazz's own first pass on Jan 27 : "Hush: pass, screen away into slice"; "Fox: pass, screen away, slash back into pin down."

Other 3-man games:

  • Joker (top) -- pass, screen away, flash back, scissor cuts.
  • Quick -- pinch post entry, cross screen. (Earlier: give and go into ball screen. (reference detail))
  • Klay -- windshield wiper: cross screen to 3, then flare to 3.

  • Roll -- give and go into ball screen; Right/Left.
  • Go 1, Go 2, Go 3 -- called Jan 22 ; routes not written.
  • Money, Snap, Laser, Thumb, Zulu -- Part III.

The same name at two scales is normal in our language. Joker the 5-man family (out of Tiger) and Joker the 3-man flash-back scissor game are both Bazz's. The call's category tells you which.

6.7 2-Man Games -- Deuce / Dice

  • Deuce -- 2-man game, right side. Dice -- left side. 5-out. (reference detail)
  • The non-ball handler signals the option. (reference detail)
